WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Psalm 99)

Leader: The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

PEOPLE: Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he!

Leader: Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

PEOPLE: Extol the LORD our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is he!

Leader: Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They cried to the LORD, and he answered them.

PEOPLE: He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; they kept his decrees, and the statutes that he gave them.

Leader: O LORD our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.

PEOPLE: Extol the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy.

INVOCATION

Creator God, you call us to love and serve you with body, mind, and spirit through loving your creation and our sisters and brothers.

Open our hearts in compassion and receive these requests on behalf of the needs of the church and the world. This we pray in Jesus name, Amen.

**OPENING HYMN              “Spirit of the Living God“                Red# 297

CALL TO CONFESSION

In the long nights of winter, darkness can harden our hearts. In the chill of morning frost, the sun warms us little. But we turn to the eternal warmth of our God that cloaks us in love and understanding. Please join me in prayer.

PRAYER FOR UNDERSTANDING

Almighty God, you love us, but we do not love you fully. You call, but we do not always

listen. We often walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. God of grace, help us to realize our imperfection so that as you move toward us in mercy, we may turn to you, and receive understanding and forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

(a moment for silent personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Our Lord is merciful. Our Lord is generous. Our Lord is eternally forgiving us. As we seek a greater understanding, we are both blessed and forgiven. Amen

**GLORIA PATRI      (Avery & Marsh, back cover of the Red Hymnal)

**PASSING OF THE PEACE

**AFFIRMATION OF FAITH -- APOSTLES CREED (As adapted by John Redman)

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was born of a young peasant woman, trained as a carpenter, and baptized by His cousin John. He taught many, He healed many, and He angered many. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He defeated death and He offers us grace and love in the name of God the Father Almighty; from that time through all time to come. I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit; the universal Church of Christ; the Communion of sharing our gifts with others; the forgiveness of our sins; the Grace of God’s love, and that each soul may have life everlasting. Amen.

**HYMN OF PRAISE           “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”             Red #558

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Gracious God, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth. Make us hungry for this heavenly food, that it may nourish us today in the ways of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORDS PRAYER

And Lord we pray for those in our own hearts whose names you already know, for their own healing and comfort, in your name and that of our redeemer Jesus Christ, who taught to pray, saying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
