PEOPLE: God's people are called to witness to God's hope, to offer peace to a shattered world.

INVOCATION

God of the ages, who care for your children spans generations, we praise and adore you. You teach us that Christ calls us to enter your covenant and that you open your Kingdom.

OPENING HYMN Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me RED #556

CALL TO CONFESSION

So much light in our world, yet we choose darkness; so many paths to take, and we go down the wrong ones, so much good we could do, and all we do is offer empty words. Let us bring our lives and hearts to our God, who is our help and hope, in this and every moment. Let us pray together, saying:

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God who creates us, Christ who redeems us, Spirit who renews us, hear our confession. We hide from you when we should heed you; we neglect your voice. Disobedience hinders our faith; we claim that others mislead us when we stray from your will, but it is our doing. Have mercy upon us and grant us your forgiveness. (A moment for silent personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Brothers and Sisters, believe in the Good News of the Gospel; in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. ALL: Thanks be to God! Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

APOSTLES CREED (As Adapted by John Redman)

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was born of a young peasant woman, trained as a carpenter, and baptized by His cousin John. He taught many, He healed many, and He angered many. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He defeated death and He offers us grace and love in the name of God the Father Almighty; from that time through all time to come. I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit; the universal Church of Christ; the Communion of sharing our gifts with others; the forgiveness of our sins; the Grace of God’s love, and that each soul may have life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise RED #62

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Prepare our hearts, O God, to accept your Word. Silence in us any voices but your own, so that we may hear your Word and understand it; focus our hearts to live within it, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MESSAGE FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

SERMON The Eye of the Needle John Redman, CRE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

God of all ages, and of every generation, whose wisdom extends beyond the horizon and whose care reaches the farthest depths of the sea, we give thinks that we live in the shelter of your encompassing love. We hear how nothing, not even death itself, can separate us from living eternally in your presence. Help us to accept the hand of Jesus Christ, extended to us to keep us from falling by the wayside of false pride, avarice, or self-deception. Let our faltering steps be strengthened by his example to suffer death on our behalf, so that we can then walk boldly with him and in his name. And we ask for the special touch of your healing hands on those named here:

Gracious God, keep in our hearts all those whose names you already know and who ask for healing in their own quiet ways, and let us join to pray as Jesus taught us, saying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS

The offering plate is at the rear of the sanctuary and let us all consider what we have been blessed with and how we can best share it with those in greater need, even as we gift our church for its greater work to the Glory of God and the undying Grace of Jesus.

OFFERTORY All Glory be to God on High setting by Johann Gottfried Walther

PRAYER OF THANKS

Gracious God, accept our gifts in tribute, they be put to good and purposeful use in assisting those in greater need even as we seek to serve you and our community and the greater world. This we gratefully pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
